names & meanings

My students and I have been trying for years to find a better name to the group, something better than SN T'ai chi. Looking at names of other schools we found loads of tigers and dragons and cranes and warriors and we always ended up leaving it the same.

I asked one of my students -knowing that is a bit egotistic- the meaning of my name in Chinese, so I could call it Jazmin T'ai Chi, but in Chinese costume.

So she told me that actually Jazmin is a very good name... er... or Jasmine pronounced in English, that is.

The names are translated by the sound, not the meaning, so my name would be transformed as Jie Sie Min. The characters are these, and it means Clever and Quick:

Which is great! Clever & Quick T'ai Chi.

But then, I also want to call the complete name to what I teach them, which is T'ai Chi Chuan. If we say just T'ai Chi, it only includes the spiritual and healing side of this taoist art. But this is a martial art, and if we write it complete with the Chuan at the end then that includes the combat aspect:

So now it would be Jie Sie Min T'ai Chi Chuan and that is too long.

Then Peck told me that English speaking people tend to short words and names and everything, so we could call it just Jie T'ai Chi Chuan and in the logo, in Chinese characters write it complete, so Chinese people would know what is all about.

Jie alone is a very good word too. It means brilliant, clever and also hero or heroine. Good huh? So lucky that my name doesn't mean clumsy and slow! Now the only problem is that the logo looks too long now...

Es un estandarte, una bandera, una forma de vida... no un logo. Es tu esencia y creo que no es fortuito su claro, brillante y heroico significado!

Que amable, oiga usted. Siempre encuentras algo bueno que decir, mujer.

Los chinos tambien, me parece. Cuando la gente va a que le escriban su nombre siempre salen con cosas asi, a lo mejor Marta significa Generosa, Amable o algo asi.
